MORGAN PARK HIGH SCHOOL
Morgan Park High School is an International Baccalaureate high school committed to academic and social excellence for all. We strive to create an atmosphere of mutual responsibility among students faculty staff parents and the community. We aim to develop globally responsible citizens who are knowledgeable open minded caring and principled thinkers.
Thee Morgan Park High School “Band of Distinction”, from Chicago’s Beverly/Morgan Park area, has had several recent successes. During October 2017 our Modern Band recently appeared on WGN’s Morning News and performed at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion. The jazz combo performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Room 43 during 2017. During June of 2014 the jazz ensemble was selected to perform on the Young Lions Stage of the 2014 Chicago Jazz Festival. In addition, the jazz ensemble was awarded the Chicago Composers Award for which the band won a commissioned work written specifically for our jazz ensemble.
Thee work was conducted by the composer during our September Chicago Jazz Festival performance. During October 2014 the marching band took 2nd place in the Circle City Classic Parade in Indianapolis, IN. During February 2015, the band was selected to embark on a new partnership with the Chicago Symphonic Winds. The marching band proclaimed “a crowd favorite” by ABC7 during the 2015 South Side Irish Parade. Our jazz ensemble was selected by the Hyde Park Jazz Society to perform at Hyde Park’s Room 43 this April. The band program has traveled to New York to perform and receive clinics.
Thee band has received Superior ratings for both the concert and jazz bands in city and state competitions. Graduating band students receive performance scholarships. Many band alumni attend and have graduated from Milliken University, DePaul University, Vandercook College of Music, Florida A&M, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff , Bethune Cookman University, Central State University, North Caroline A&T, Miles College, Alabama state University.
